My dad calls it a "union card" in the same flavor that you described in the second point of your first list. Others remind us that the dissertation is the beginning of one's research career, not the magnum opus. So glad to hear you no longer feel that your dissertation has to be the work that changes the world. Even @ the Ph.D level the same issues that translate into into diparities in education for children of color are relevant. My grandmother told me something very simple that has greatly benefited me in my adult life, "Never tell your Right Hand what your Left Hand is doing". I've found that we must always be tactical in our agenda, especially as African-Americans because it becomes painfully obvious that there are people (Black included) who would rather see us rise (and/or fall if necessary) to mediocrity. To be profound takes freedom, i.e : Dr. Joy Degray-Leary, Dr. Martin Luther King, Dr. W.E.B DuBois and prospective Ph.D candidate Leshell Hatley. I'd just like to reiterate your truth with a "Amen!", a "Hallelujah!", and a ::Soul Clap::. BEST of LUCK!!! Wow! Ms. Hatley I’ve thoroughly enjoyed reading your post.
