Thank God for President Barack Obama!

Last night was absolutely amazing. From all the election watch parties to everyone hoping and praying as we watched returns to the joy in the streets until the wee hours of the morning when the election results were finally announced. Barack Obama won the 2008 US Presidential Election and will become the 44th President. A historic moment for so many and for so many reasons. The victory of an African-American (multi-racial) man becoming the first one elected President, the brilliance of his campaign, and the cheers of the world in response to it all was truly amazing and profound.

I cried during Barack Obama’s acceptance speech, especially when he spoke of Ann Dixon Cooper – the 106 year old African-American woman who voted in ATL – and all she had seen and witnessed in her lifetime. It was awesome reflection of what this country has been through over the past century, from the African-American perspective as well as a simple historic one. I also thought about my family, especially my Grandmother – who shared that my Great Grandmother was required to say the pledge of allegiance before being allowed to register/vote, about what it all means to African-Americans, and more importantly to all of America, and then I thought about my research and my own personal journey. It was an awe inspiring moment – one that will never be forgotten!

We celebrated in the streets of DC (14th, 11th & U Streets) until I could no longer stand and hold my eyes open. Crystal and I were on our way homes and decided to turn back around and head back for more celebration. We thought we had to absorb the moment as much as we could. It was great to see everyone rejoicing.

I woke up to CNN discussing the reactions around the world, which made me cry one more time. This man has produced astounding reactions and caused enormous amounts of hope, pride, and love. We are living at an amazing time and as Oprah Winfrey says, “the best is yet to come!”

Congratulations President Barack Obama! I look forward to having your family as my first family! It will be a real joy to see a family that looks like mine and can relate to our stories living in the White House for the next four years.

See you at the motorcade!!!
